Why my sound is not working on the laptop?
I’ve recently encountered an issue where the sound on my laptop has completely stopped working. I was using it just fine, and suddenly, there is no audio coming through the speakers or even when I plug in headphones. It’s frustrating because I rely on my laptop for daily tasks like video calls, watching videos, and listening to music. The sound settings seem to be in order, and I haven’t made any recent changes that I can pinpoint as the cause. Rebooting the laptop didn’t help either. I’m not sure if this is a hardware issue or something related to the software. This problem has really disrupted my routine and I’m not sure what steps to take next to diagnose the cause.

When this happened to me, it turned out to be a simple fix related to the onboard audio service. If your sound settings are correct and drivers are up-to-date, the next step is to restart the audio service.
- Press Win+R, type ‘services.msc’, and press Enter.
- Scroll down to ‘Windows Audio’ and right-click on it.
- Select ‘Restart’.
- If restarting doesn’t work, try setting it to ‘Automatic’ if it isn’t set already.

In my case, the issue was hardware-related. My laptop’s headphone jack was damaged, causing the system to think headphones were permanently plugged in. Here’s how I diagnosed it:
- Insert and remove a pair of headphones gently.
- If the sound returns, the jack is likely the issue.
- If you feel confident, open the laptop’s hardware settings to disable the headphone jack temporarily.
- Alternatively, you might need a hardware repair or replacement.

Once I had a problem with missing system files causing the sound to be non-functional. I ran the Windows troubleshooter which identified and fixed the issue.
- Open Settings and go to ‘Update & Security’.
- Select ‘Troubleshoot’ and then ‘Additional troubleshooters’.
- Click on ‘Playing Audio’ and choose ‘Run the troubleshooter’.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

The sound issue on my laptop was traced back to the audio settings. They had somehow gotten disrupted, possibly due to a recent software update. Here’s what resolved my problem:
- Right-click the sound icon in the system tray.
- Select ‘Open Sound settings’.
- Under ‘Output’, choose the correct audio device (your speakers/headphones).
- Make sure the volume is not on mute.
- Click on ‘App volume and device preferences’ to ensure your applications are set to the correct device.

I faced a similar issue with my laptop’s sound. Here’s what I discovered: the sound drivers on my laptop had become outdated and needed an update. Updating drivers is essential as it ensures compatibility and proper functioning with the latest software.
- Check and update your sound drivers.
- Navigate to Device Manager (search it in the Start Menu).
- Locate ‘Sound, video and game controllers’.
- Right-click on your audio device and select ‘Update driver’.
- Choose ‘Search automatically for updated driver software’.
- Follow the prompts to update if there’s a newer version available.

My solution was a little different; the issue was with the audio enhancements provided by third-party software pre-installed on my laptop. They were causing a conflict.
- Open the Control Panel and select ‘Hardware and Sound’.
- Click on ‘Sound’ and open the ‘Playback’ tab.
- Right-click your default device and select ‘Properties’.
- Go to the ‘Enhancements’ tab and check the box ‘Disable all enhancements’.
- Apply the changes.

A very unconventional reason could be the BIOS settings. This is what fixed the problem in my case when everything above failed.
- Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, F10, DEL during startup).
- Look for an audio-related setting and ensure it’s enabled.
- Some BIOS settings might have a ‘Reset to Default’ option—this reset fixed my sound issue.
